What do you know about the Barcelona Ring Roads LEZ?

Vehicles which pollute the most have been unable to access the low emission zone (LEZ) delimited by the city’s ring roads (Rondes) since 2020. The area covers over 95 square kilometres and circulation restrictions apply to the most pollutant vehicles with the aim of protecting the atmosphere, people’s health and the environment.

The LEZ covers the entire municipality of Barcelona (except for Zona Franca and the neighbourhood of Vallvidrera, el Tibidabo i les Planes), the municipality of Hospitalet de Llobregat and part of the municipalities of Cornellà de Llobregat, Esplugues de Llobregat and Sant Adrià de Besòs.

Users can keep up with all the information relating to the Barcelona Ring Roads LEZ on the project’s website at zbe.barcelona, which uses the city domain to provide details and the latest news on this programme. The site includes information such as which vehicles are affected by the restrictions, details on the regulations, applying for daily authorisations for the most pollutant vehicles to circulate and information on what is being done in terms of sustainable mobility.

Reduction in journeys by vehicles that pollute the most

Since the low emission zone was announced, the most pollutant vehicles have been replaced. These are vehicles which are not suitable to be issued with an environmental rating badge from the Directorate General for Traffic (DGT). In three years, journeys made by cars and motorbikes which pollute the most have dropped, with 550,000 fewer journeys.

At the same time, between the first half of 2020 and February 2021, the volume of vehicles circulating within the LEZ without the environmental badge from the DGT fell from between 9 and 10% to between 3.5 and 4.5%.

Moratorium for vans, lorries and coaches being replaced

The circulation of vehicles without the DGT badge, namely lorries and small coaches (N2, N3 and M2) affected by the end of the moratorium on 31 December, is currently allowed as long as vehicle owners sign a declaration of their intention to acquire a new vehicle. This declaration involves a commitment to renew the vehicle by 30 June 2022. With the moratoriums now over, the hope is that the volume of vehicles circulating in the Ring Roads LEZ without the DGT environmental badge will drop to below 1%.

Vehicles with the following badges can continue to circulate in the LEZ with no restrictions from working Mondays to Fridays this year, between 7 am and 8 pm:

  • Yellow badge (B)
  • Green badge (C)
  • Eco badge (Eco)
  • 0 badge (Zero emissions)

Barcelona Sports Tech Hub’s got the dot!

Located in Montjuïc, the Barcelona Sports Tech Hub is intended to make the city an international leader in the sports tech sector and improve the economic competitiveness of businesses, organisations and institutions in this field.

Having recently launched its website with a .barcelona domain, the Barcelona Sports Tech Hub houses and promotes projects linked to any sphere of physical activity and sports, with an emphasis on three areas:

  • High-performance sport
  • Water sports and the promotion of the blue economy
  • Sport among the general public

The hub is made up of companies, large corporations, institutions, start-ups and other tech stakeholders with projects to transform and improve the management and practice of sport, including projects linked to e-sports.

Important projects have been launched within the context of the Barcelona Sports Tech Hub which will help the facility function in its first few years. In the future the hub will also have a branch at the Palau Municipal d’Esports:

  • First incubator for sports tech start-ups in Barcelona, located at the Olympic Stadium with an area of 1,167 m2 and promoted by BSM and Barcelona Activa.
  • New project for the Olympic Port, managed and promoted by BSM.
  • Support programmes for the creation of start-ups in sports and technology, to validate business models for projects through training, advice and networking. This includes six months of co-working for sports start-ups at the Almogàvers incubator.

The initial budget for the Barcelona Sports Tech Hub is three million euros.

The .barcelona domain joins the international geoTLD group

Thanks to its participation in this association, the .barcelona domain is better represented in the sector and will be able to exchange experiences and generate transnational projects with other geographical domains.

By becoming one of the 37 members of the geoTLD group in the spring this year, the .barcelona domain forms part of a community of a million active top-level geographical domains which promote the digital identity of regions, languages, cultures and nearly 70 member cities on the internet. The most significant member cities are .berlin, .paris, .london, .tokyo and .madrid, which also joined recently.

This international non-governmental and non-profit association works in the interests of geographical domains as a way of promoting local identities, positively disseminating and sharing their values. It includes governments, organisations, businesses and associations from all around the globe. Chaired by Catalonia’s Nacho Amadoz, head of the Fundació.cat, the geoTLP group is also a hub for the exchange of knowledge, communication and marketing materials and research projects.

This working group is also present in the ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers), an organisation working to coordinate domains at a global level.

Renewed your .barcelona domain yet?

When you register any internet domain you do so for a specific period of time, normally a year. Once that period expires, if you don’t renew the domain it becomes available so that any other interested party can register it.

How do I know when my domain expires?

The user panel with your registration company displays the date of purchase and the expiry date of your .barcelona domain, as well as any other services contracted with them (hosting, personalised email etc.). You can also renew your .barcelona domain from the panel and keep it active for your website and/or email.

It’s important to understand that you don’t need to wait until the last minute to renew your .barcelona domain. It can be renewed in advance without forfeiting the period in between. For example, if your domain expires on 10 January 2021, you can renew it now and it will remain active until 10 January 2022. This means you will never lose out on the time your domain is valid for or be at risk of losing it.

I’ve got a discount code for renewal. When can I use it?

If you got a discount code from one of the .barcelona promotions you need to bear two things in mind:

  1. Whether your registration company is one of those which accepts the discount code.
  2. Whether the code is still valid and hasn’t expired.

Don’t leave it until the last minute and renew your domain to take advantage of the discount code.
